We are happy to house one of the premiere San Diego library boxes right here at the Merge Shopping Center. It’s an invaluable resource for bibliophiles everywhere.

About the Little Red Library

The little red library didn’t start in San Diego. Actually, it began in Wisconsin, where a couple of book lovers wanted to do their part to promote literacy, and to make great books accessible to everyone.

So they erected a little red box, or miniature “library,” in a public park; they filled it with some gently used books and invited their neighbors to either take or add books at their leisure.

The idea took off, creating a way for everyone to access books, while also providing a community-focused way of passing along your previous reads. Today, little red libraries can be found all across the world. And we are proud to have a little red library in San Diego. Come see it the next time you’re in the area.

Who is the Little Red Library For?

This free Carmel Valley library is meant for everyone… but in particular, we think it’s beneficial for the following groups:

• People who need something to read. We know there are many kids and adults alike who can’t necessarily afford to buy books of their own. And others simply need a little help selecting a good title! No matter which category you’re in, the little red library is an open resource for finding the next book you’ll fall in love with.

• People who are ready to pass on their previously read books. What happens when you don’t want to clutter your home with books, but also can’t bring yourself to throw books away? Why not pay it forward, placing your favorite previously read books into the little red library box?
